Cambodian authorities found a body floating near the Thai border on Thursday that is believed to be a 21-year-old British woman who went missing last week from a beach party in a coastal area popular with backpackers. Amelia Bambridge’s disappearance prompted a search with divers, land-based teams and police drones after her purse was found on a beach with her mobile phone and watch inside. Cambodian maritime authorities located the body in waters near the Thai border, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) away from where she had disappeared last week, said Chuon Narin, police chief of the Preah Sihanouk province.“The body is being transported by boat from the Thai border. It will take two hours to reach the mainland,” Narin said.“According to the people who are transporting her body, it’s almost 100 percent her, looking at her body’s markings, including tattoo,” Narin said. He said Bambridge’s family was with the authorities when they found the body floating amid some rocks off Koh Chhlam, an island in neighbouring Koh Kong province. Narin said police will conduct an autopsy when the body reaches the mainland, adding that early indications pointed to drowning as the cause of death. Bambridge was last seen on Oct. 24 leaving for a beach party on the island of Koh Rong, which is popular with backpackers, and was posting photos online until 3:23 a.m. Bambridge’s brother, father and mother arrived in Cambodia on Sunday to join the search. The post Body of 21-year-old British tourist missing in Cambodian found floating in the sea appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Justice at last: Man convicted of murder 13 years after he killed his wife and two children in London and fled to Bangladesh
A man who murdered his wife and their two children in December 2007 before fleeing to Bangladesh immediately afterwards has finally been brought to justice. Mohammed Abdul Shakur, 45, was found guilty at the Old Bailey on Thursday, 31 October, of the murder of his wife, 26-year-old Juli Begum, and their two daughters, five-year-old Anika Khanum and six-year-old Thanha Khanum, at the family home in East Ham. He is due to be sentenced on Friday, 1 November. The court heard that police were called to the family address in Nelson Street, E6, at around 12:35hrs on Wednesday, 1 January 2007 after a concerned family member had not seen or heard from Juli for around 10 days, and the children had not returned to school after the Christmas break. Police attended and forced entry to the address. There they found the bodies of Juli, Anika and Thanha concealed under a duvet in a rear bedroom.Post mortem examinations for the three were held at East Ham mortuary in January 2007. Cause of death for Juli was initially inconclusive but later ruled to be consistent with asphyxiation. Thanha’s cause of death was recorded as consistent with head trauma, while Anika was confirmed as having been killed by strangulation with a ligature. Detectives had launched a murder investigation and Shakur was quickly identified as a suspect after it emerged that he had purchased a one way ticket to Bangladesh at the time of the murder. The court would hear that Shakur and Juli had had an arranged married in Bangladesh in October 1999 and she had subsequently sponsored his immigration Visa so that they could return to the UK. However incidents of domestic conflict began to emerge just a few months into the marriage. Police were called to domestic incidents at the couple’s home, but the allegations were never substantiated and so no one was ever charged. On 2 January 2007, Shakur visited the home of a colleague, who he worked with as a chef at a restaurant in Frimley, Surrey. He explained that he would not be attending work as he had to return home due to the death of his father. Detectives established that Shakur had attended the Bangladeshi High Commission to obtain a passport that same day. The following day he went to a travel agent in Bethnal Green and ordered a one way ticket to Bangladesh. He attended Heathrow Airport on 4 January for a flight to Dhaka via Calcutta, however it was delayed overnight and all passengers were put up in a hotel. It took off at 07:30hrs on 5 January. Shakur was shown as being on the flight manifest and mobile phone records would later confirm his arrival in Bangladesh. Enquiries to trace and arrest Shakur were undertaken in Bangladesh and India after information suggested that he was in the Assam region of India, close to the border of Bangladesh. Contact was made with a Foreign and Commonwealth representative in New Delhi, who informed local police of the Met’s interest in Shakur. Several years passed by without any trace of Shakur. However, in May 2013, the FCO representative called detectives to inform them that Shakur had been arrested for being in India illegally. It is thought that he had been crossing back and forth between the countries on a regular basis for work. Formal extradition proceedings began and Shakur said he would not oppose extradition. The process was not completed until April 2019, when Shakur was finally extradited back to the UK on Saturday, 6 April. He was taken to Heathrow police station, where he was charged with three counts of murder. He did not make any comment. The family of Juli Begum said: "Abdul Shakur has destroyed our family. He took away a caring, loving mother and sister Juli and he has taken away the future of two young beautiful girls, Thanha and Anika. We struggle with thoughts of how their lives may have ended and what each of them must have witnessed in their final moments. We miss them every day and we cannot forgive this senseless loss of life. “Shakur’s final act of cowardice was fleeing to Bangladesh. This meant justice took so long to be delivered, it was something our mother never got to see.” Detective Sergeant Amjad Sharif, Specialist Crime investigator, said: “We will likely never be able to understand what could have driven Shakur to snap and end the lives of his wife and two daughters so violently and callously.“In the years since, Juli, Anika and Thanma’s family have had to endure the most unimaginable torment. At times it must have seemed that there would never be justice; from Shakur immediately fleeing the UK, to the protracted process that followed over many years when he was finally apprehended.“I am happy now to say that we have finally achieved justice for Juli and her daughters, and her family. I would like to thank them for their unwavering support throughout. Though many years have passed, I know their grieving continues, and I hope this development will allow them some small measure of comfort.“I would also like to thank our international policing counterparts in Bangladesh and India, and especially the Foreign and Commonwealth representative who assisted us so well in circulating Shakur as a wanted man to local police, and indeed informing us when he was located. This is a prime example of the good that can come from international law enforcement working together to catch criminals. Now at last Shakur will serve a substantial custodial sentence for the horrific crimes he committed.”The post Justice at last: Man convicted of murder 13 years after he killed his wife and two children in London and fled to Bangladesh appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Expectant father accuses EFCC officials of breaking into his home in the middle of the night to conduct a search
An expectant father has accused EFCC officials of breaking into his home in the middle of the night to conduct a search without a warrant. The man said he was at his home in Olokuta, Kemta, in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta between 3 am to 5 am, when some men forcefully broke into his house using a hammer. He added that he was afraid they were armed robbers, so he hid in the guest bedroom with his pregnant wife as the men broke in through the sitting room window. According to him, the intruders claimed to be EFCC officials looking for "Yahoo boys", but they had no form of identification, neither did they have a search warrant. Even without a search warrant, the victim alleged that they searched his house, damaged things, then left without as much as an apology. Photos shared with LIB shows that the lock on the gate leading into the compound was broken. They also used force on the burglary proof, thereby causing a dent to it. A door leading into one of the rooms in the house shows signs of forced entry, with the lock damaged. Narrating the incident to LIB, the victim said: "This is what EFCC men did to my house in the early hours of the morning. Is this right? "They claim to be looking for yahoo boys but busted my house and entered forcefully damaging the house by the use of hammer to break in through my sitting room window at the end they did not find anything incriminating me after they saw that am a working class individual. "They definitely entered the wrong house. No apologies whatsoever and I asked what will happen to the damages done, they just left without saying anything. "They looked more like armed robbers and everyone was scared to death as we were not sure who they were, infact who will open for people in the hours of 3 to 5am in the morning. "Is EFCC supposed to forcefully break into people's home at that hour without any form of notification or warrant?" Below are photos of the damage done to his home. Titi Horsfall, Nigerian Iconic Author & Strong Advocate For The Girlchild, Talks About Her New Book, ''The Rivers Frontiers''
1. Who is Titi Horsfall in 5 words? Writer with creative & visionary focus. 2. What inspired you to choose writing as a career? Writing chose me. Therein, I found my gift to bequeath to the world. Every piece of literary work I undertake is a personal journey of fulfilment and a channel of hope, inspiration and wisdom to my readers. 3. When did you start writing? I started out writing poetry when I was about 8 years old. Having started reading at about 3 years of age, I honed certain literary skills quite early in life, which braced me up for a life of writing and sealed my path in it. 4. What would you say makes a good story? One that captures the true essence of the reality of life from diverse perspectives; merged into one piece to paint a beautiful picture. A story that every reader could understand and relate to, drawing from it life lessons. 5. How many of your books have been published so far, and which is the most recent?Four books, and a short story. Reflections Poetry & its Study Guide, From an Orphan to a Queen; Esther (historical novel), Influence of a King (historical novel), Fancy Loma (a short story), and The Rivers Frontier (historical non-fiction) which is the most recent. 6. How did you feel your first book- Reflections was published? Reflections is a poetry collection that showcases the literary phase during my growing up years. I was quite fascinated by 18th century classic poets like John Keates and Lord Byron. My poetry was formal and structured in like fashion. With the publishing of Reflections, my journey as a writer officially begun. It was a wonderful experience. Today, Reflections is an educational text in some secondary schools. 7.Where does your passion for history come from? I have a very curious streak. As a child, I could ask many questions under one breath. If you need to answer a question as to 'how did this come about?' you invariably go the path of history. I am naturally drawn to the old, vintage, relic, diverse and archaic treasures. I love developing stories around these. I recall vividly when as a child, I watched the movie: The Ten Commandments. I watched with dawning reality that Bible stories were very much a part of our natural history. They were not mystic tales. With this realisation, I began researching key historic figures and places. It was this interest that led me to my first novel From an Orphan to a Queen, Esther. 8. What does a typical day writing as Titi Horsfall look like? I am naturally more creative towards the evenings. Maybe because I have gotten the business of the day out of my way, I can then do me. This however keeps me awake all night, and is certainly not the best proposition. So, I am more deliberate about when I write. I write during the daytime, and on weekends or vacations. Any day I commit to writing, I start off very early, because once I begin, I am often enraptured with the process and time literarily fades into the background. Call it passion. 9. As an author, how has the journey been, up to this moment when your fourth book, The Rivers Frontier is published and set for release? It has been a journey of grace. Almost unbelievable to note that I hold down a full-time job, juggle motherhood and still commit to writing! I just keep moving forward and thanking God every step of the way! 10. If you were to describe your new book, The Rivers Frontier, in three words, what would they be? Treasure, Collector's Piece. 11. What do you enjoy doing outside of writing?Reading & Golfing 12. How long does it take you to complete a project? It depends on what stage of my life I was at, and the nature of the work. When I was a nursing mother or schooling, it took longer. The minimum time I have taken to write a book is 3years. it took 3 years to write this book 13. Tell us one random thing about you that your readers don’t know. I love nature - to marvel at cloud formations, enjoy the picturesque view of flowers in full bloom or the sound of raindrops on a roof. I guess this comes from my being keenly observant, which translates into my writing. 14. Have you ever received criticism for your works? No. 15. What top 3 tips will you recommend to writers in Nigeria to overcome doubt in this career? 1. Be true to yourself. This would validate you. 2. Love what you do when not writing. It releases your mind for the task of writing. 3. Explore possibilities. You can never know unless you try. 16. Finally, tell us about your new book set to publish in November titled “The Rivers Frontiers”? The Rivers Frontier The Rivers Frontier is a history book with a modern twist. It would stir a contemplation of the future, with the understanding that the world we have today is ours to preserve for those yet to come. Primarily aimed at leadership - politicians, administrators, youth leaders, policy makers and thought Influencers - scholars, researchers, historians, investors and lovers of African literature would also find the book very useful. While the theme is centred on people of the Niger Delta, the heart of the message is a clarion call for the dignity of the black race and Africa's development. The post Titi Horsfall, Nigerian Iconic Author & Strong Advocate For The Girlchild, Talks About Her New Book, ''The Rivers Frontiers'' appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

At least 65 dead in Pakistan after a packed passenger train blew up and burst into flames
At least 65 people have died and many more are injured in Pakistan after a packed passenger train blew up and burst into flames. The train erupted in a fireball after a gas canister being used to cook food exploded. The fire destroyed three of the train’s carriages near the town of Rahim Yar Khan in the south of Punjab province. Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told Geo TV: "Two cooking stoves blew up. They were cooking, they had (cooking) oil which added fuel to fire. He added: "Most deaths occurred from people jumping off the train." Officials have said many more people are injured, some in a critical condition. Punjab health minister Dr Yasmin Rashid told AFP that more than 40 injured people were being transported to local hospitals. Authorities have warned the death toll could still rise, with the military drafted in to help rescue efforts. People sneaking stoves onto trains in order to prepare meals on long journeys is a common problem, the minister said. The post At least 65 dead in Pakistan after a packed passenger train blew up and burst into flames appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Is it OK to leave your 3-day-old baby at home to go party? Instagram users debate after Shay Mitchell went to Drake's party only days after welcoming her child
Is it ever OK to leave your 3 day old baby at home to go party? This debate arose after Shay Mitchell was shamed for attending Drake’s birthday last week only three days after giving birth to her baby girl. Drake celebrated his 33rd birthday on October 24 and invited his celebrity friends to his lavish party. Pretty Little Liar actress, Shay Mitchell was one of those in attendance. But fans felt it was inappropriate because she had announced only three days prior that she welcomed a baby. Shay received a hefty amount of backlash as a result. "You partied three days after her birth...no respect," one Instagram user said to Shay. Shay replied the mommy shamers in a now-deleted video posted to her Instagram Story. She explained that, although she posted the announcement photo three days prior to partying with Drake and other celebrities, that wasn’t the actual day she welcomed her daughter to the world. She said: "I haven’t been really checking my comments that often, but apparently, people are really upset that I left three days after having a kid to go out and party." "It wasn’t three days and she was with [my dog] Angel, so…" she joked. She later took to Twitter to make it clear that she was joking about the child being under the care of her dog Angel. In spite of her explanation, the debate is still going on. Now the question is, is it OK to leave your newborn baby at home to go and party? Lagos State House of Assembly suspends probe of Akinwunmi Ambode indefinitely
The ad-hoc committee set up by the Lagos State House of Assembly to investigate all transactions in respect of the 820 buses procured by the immediate past administration of Akinwunmi Ambode has suspended its sitting indefinitely. The lawmakers’ decision came following Wednesday’s ruling by an Ikeja Division of the Lagos State High Court ordering all parties in a suit filed by Ambode against the lawmakers to maintain status quo, while it adjourned till November 20 for the next hearing. Addressing journalists shortly after a brief sitting by the committee to announce its decision, its chairman, Fatai Mojeed, said the matter was adjourned indefinitely as the committee got a court order to stay action on the matter and that they had to respect the opinion of the court. “We are lawmakers, we are not law breakers, which was why we had to adjourn the matter indefinitely. The people of Lagos should be expecting more from us,” he said. Also speaking, Gbolahan Yishawu said the House was not trying to witch-hunt anybody or put anybody on the spot for any reason. Yishawu stressed that the assembly was not being pushed by any individual on the matter, while recalling that the issue dated back to 2017, when it was included in the appropriation law but was not approved by the House. However, Olaniran Obele from the chambers of Tayo Oyetibo, the counsel to Mr Ambode, expressed dismay that they were not allowed into the committee room and could not confirm if they sat. Obele, however, welcomed the decision of the committee to suspend further sitting on the matter based on the High Court ruling. He said he was at the assembly to drop a letter stating reasons why the former governor could no longer honour the summon as a result of the court ruling. “The former governor was invited by the ad hoc committee to appear before it today,” said Mr Obele.“We came to represent Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, but the officials of the House of Assembly, in a military manner, prevented us from entering the Committee room. You saw what transpired at the committee level, we were not allowed to go in. “There is a matter pending in court and this afternoon, the court said the status quo should be maintained, that nothing should be done. We brought processes from the court and letters to serve on the Chairman of the Committee and the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly but they refused to accept validly issued court documents and letter conveying what the court has said to them”, Mr Obele said. Part of the content of the letter read thus: “In the circumstances, we request that further proceedings of the committee, and indeed the entire House, in respect of the subject matter of the suit, be adjourned to wait the outcome of the court proceedings so as not to bring the House in collision with the court as the matter is now subjudice. “Finally, we wish to inform you that since the constitutionality of the proceedings of the committee is being challenged in the civil Suit, our client will not be able to appear before the committee until the matter is decided by the court in order not to prejudice the fair hearing of his case.”The post Lagos State House of Assembly suspends probe of Akinwunmi Ambode indefinitely appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

2 children abducted in Gombe, found in Anambra
The Anambra State Police command has rescued two children who were abducted in Gombe State and trafficked to the state. Three suspects; Patience Opia from Cross River, Ejece Obi, from Anambra State and Blessings John from Bauchi State linked to the abduction which occurred while the children were playing in their parents' compound, were also paraded by the Anambra State Police Command. The State's Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed said the suspects planned selling each of the children for N750k before being nabbed. The principal suspect, Blessings John reportedly claimed that she was the biological mother of one of the children while the other one belonged to her late sister. It was however gathered that the kids recognized who their parents were after they turned up at the police station. The father of the rescued kids, Abdulaziz Suleman said they discovered their kids were found in Anambra through social media. Speaking to newsmen, Opia denied knowing the two kids were abducted and also had a price tag on them. The lady who hawks sachet water at the Onitsha main market said Blessing told her that one of the children was her child, while the other was her late sister’s child and that they needed somebody to help in training them in school. Opia added that she linked Ejece Obi with Blessing after a search. “I don’t know the lady apart from when she came to Onitsha and claimed that she was robbed by armed robbers. Also I didn’t know that there were price tags on the boys. I am just hearing about the N750,000 price for each of the boys. I am not aware of any intention to sell the boys,” she said. The post 2 children abducted in Gombe, found in Anambra appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
