Nigeria will not be represented at the 2021 World Athletics Relays that would be taking place this weekend, in Silesia, Poland. John Akanji, media aide to the sports minister, Sunday Dare, said the country will not participate in the relays because "the athletes were denied visas by the Polish embassy." Akanji's statement was to refute claims that Nigerian athletes will not be exchanging batons in Poland because of infighting between officials. A leadership crisis is currently rocking the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), with the sports ministry backing a faction headed by one Olamide George. Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau, the factional leader of the AFN, whose leadership is being tagged "illegitimate" by a rival faction led by Olamide George, had released a press statement on Thursday, April 29. In the press release, he blamed sports ministry officials for Nigeria missing out on the competition. In the statement titled, "Sports ministry scuttles Nigeria’s World Relays participation", Gusau claimed the Ministry of Youth and Sports chose to take the athletes to a training tour in the United States for the same relays they are yet to qualify for, instead of the pre-Olympic Games qualification in Poland. The statement by the Shehu-Gusau-led AFN reads: "Nigeria will not participate in the World Relays because the Ministry of Youth and Sports opted to take the athletes to a training tour in the United States for the same relays, they are yet to qualify for, instead of a pre- Olympic Games qualification in Poland. "The information at our disposal is that athletes who were supposed to represent Nigeria at the World Athletics Relays in Silesia, Poland, were taken to the USA Embassy to obtain visas for a training tour of an event they were yet to qualify for. "The scheduled relays in Poland were meant to enable Nigeria to secure qualification for the Olympic Games in Tokyo but to our disbelief, the athletes’ passports were diverted to the USA Embassy to secure visas for a training camp for an event they are yet to qualify for. How can a qualification competition in Poland which was our best bet be ignored for a training camp inthe USA? "This is one of the numerous reasons why sports in Nigeria should be allowed to be administered according to international best practices." However, Joshua Akanji, Senior Adviser on Media to the Sports Minister, told Premium TImes that Gusau has no locus standi to issue a press statement as AFN President. Akanji said: "Gusau is not the president of the AFN so you cannot say the AFN President issued a press statement, you are fully aware of the position of the World Athletics and CAA in their fact-finding mission, they insist that they recognise the 2017 AFN Constitution." He berated Gusau for allegedly putting his personal interest ahead of 200 million Nigerians. Akanji explained that it was following the refusal of the Polish Embassy in Nigeria to issue entry visas to Nigeria’s contingent to the World Relays that the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) moved to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the five relay events at the Tokyo Olympics. The statement read in part: "To this end, a number of athletics meetings have been secured in the United States of America while a five-nation relay meeting is also on the card to hold in Nigeria before the window for qualification closes on June 29, 2021. "It must be noted that only the top 16 relay teams/ times will participate at the Tokyo Olympics. The Ministry is properly guided and Team Nigeria is not in any jeopardy." Both the Sports Ministry and the AFN said they had anticipated that Gusau would block the registration of Nigerian athletes for the event, as he is still in the custody of the official password of the federation, so they moved to organise a few meetings in the USA to ensure the teams get the chance to still qualify for the Olympics, Premium Times reports. "The AFN led by the acting president, Olamide George, was only availed the opportunity to register the team following the intervention of the two-man Confederation of African Athletics team that came to Abuja last week to resolve the conflict within the AFN. "We did not get to officially register the team until Thursday last week and apply for entry visas at the Polish Embassy. Upon our application, the Polish Embassy insisted it would take two weeks to process the visa applications and all entreaties for a quick consideration were ignored," said Niyi Beyioku, the AFN Secretary-General. Beyioku continued: "The Sports Minister, Sunday Dare had to involve the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure we get the team visas to Poland but the embassy stood its ground and we, after consultations with the Sports Ministry decided to switch to our second plan which was to convert a pre-arranged training tour to include qualification for the five relay events. The Lagos state police command has arrested a 42-year-old man, Segun Olusoji, for allegedly defiling his nine-year-old daughter in the Ilasamaja area of the state. Parading the suspect before newsmen on Thursday, April 29, the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the suspect usually wakes his daughter to defile her. “The case was initially reported by one Oluwafunmibi Ojewale, 27, against one Segun Olusoji, 42, at the Itire Divisional Police Headquarters and it was subsequently transferred to the SCIID, Yaba, for discreet investigation.Upon interrogation, the complainant asserted that the suspect had unlawful carnal knowledge of his nine-year-old daughter. The victim also affirmed that the father usually wakes her up at night to carry out the indecent act”he said In a related development, the police said a man identified as Ebuka Orji, has been arrested for defiling a 12-year-old girl. Disclosing this to newsmen, the state police commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, said “The 12-year-old alleged that one Ebuka Orji asked her to come to their kitchen when her mother was not at home. On getting to the kitchen, he removed her pants and put his manhood in her private parts, while the second suspect, Eze Emmanuel, pecked her sometime last year. The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a painter, Moses Olaitan, and his accomplice, Segun Omoshola, for allegedly impersonating the Elegushi of Ikate land, Oba Saheed Elegushi, and using his image to defraud a woman they met on Facebook of N51m. Parading the suspect before newsmen on Thursday, April 29, the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the suspect was arrested following a complaint lodged at the station. He said after a detailed investigation, detectives tracked down and arrested Olaitan and Segun three months after perpetrating the crime. Speaking to newsmen, Olaitan said after he opened a Facebook account in the name of the monarch and started posting different pictures of the traditional ruler to attract potential suitors. “Everything happened on Facebook. I impersonated Oba Saheed Elegushi on Facebook and used his pictures. She (the victim) connected with me online and said she wanted to marry a king and we started from there. I told her that if she wanted to marry a king, she needs to do some cultural activities and she agreed.She told me to send my account number, but because I didn’t have an account number, I contacted Segun, who provided the account used for collecting the money.I was paid N2.5m and it was when I was brought to the command that I got to know that what she paid was N51m. How I was arrested was that the police tracked my cousin’s number. I was making arrangements for my birthday when the police arrested me.”Olaitan said His accomplice, 48-year-old Segun, said he got only N3.5 million from the crime and is shocked that N51 million was actually paid by the victim. “I took him to those who provided the account used in collecting the money from the woman. Gunmen have abducted a lecturer at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Professor Osadolor Odia. Odia, a Professor of Engineering and former Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was abducted on his way to the farm in Egoro, Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area on Thursday morning, April 29. A source, who pleaded anonymity told Tribune the abductors had made contact with the family demanding for a ransom of N18 million. The Ogun state police command has warned organizers of Yoruba nation rally against carrying on with it, as it is capable of undermining the relative peace being enjoyed in the entire State. The police which noted that the group will be holding its fourth rally in the state on May 1, accused the secessionists of attacking security operatives when being stopped from distributing inciting letters in the past. Abimbola Oyeyemi, spokesman of the Ogun police command stated that though they have exhibited restraint and absolute calm even in the face of extreme provocations by the organisers of the rallies and their cohorts, they will not perpetually stand by and watch public conducts of some citizens hold others to the ransom and threaten the corporate existence of the country. The statement read; “It will be recalled that the group had on 21/3/2021 staged a public rally at Isara Remo for the actualization of Oduduwa republic, where they blocked highways and made free-flow of traffic very difficult for other road users. The same group staged another rally in Shagamu on 16/4/2021 where they made an attempt to attack Shagamu police station for no reason. Yet, on 25/4/2021, they held another rally at Ajuwon where in the course of stopping them from distributing inciting letters, policemen and other security agents were jeered at and pelted with missiles. “The same group is again planning to hold another mass rally on 1st May, 2021 at Abeokuta, making it the 4th rally in the State in quick succession.“The general public should note that the Command had difficulties in preventing hoodlums from infiltrating and hijacking the earlier rallies and preventing what would have been a major breakdown of law and order and disturbance of public peace.“We had also exhibited restraint and absolute calm even in the face of extreme provocations by the organisers of the rallies and their cohorts.“However, it is important to note that the police will not perpetually stand by and watch public conducts of some citizens hold others to the ransom and threaten the corporate existence of the country. An elderly pastor was arrested on the streets of London for making "homophobic comments" and telling passers-by that same-sex couples were against "God’s created order". Pastor John Sherwood and Pastor Peter Simpson were preaching outside Uxbridge tube station in West London on Friday, April 23, when police officers were called on them. Simpson said that he "began the preaching and referred to the grave abandonment by our nation of its Christian foundations, an abandonment which has manifested itself in, for example, the redefinition of marriage". Same-sex marriage, he said, was "an assault upon the Biblical revelation, which tells us that marriage can be only between one man and one woman". 
Sherwood, 71, then took over and began "expounding the final verses of Genesis 1". He told passers-by that families must be "headed by a father and a mother", and that "the distinction within mankind of just two genders, male and female, made in the image of God, constitutes the essence of God’s created order". Police soon arrived at the scene, saying they have received complaints about "homophobic comments" made by the pastor that were causing "distress" to members of the public. Officers were caught on video asking him to stop preaching against LGBT+ people, which he refused to do. 
Sherwood was then told he was under arrest and was asked to come down from his step stool, which he also refused to do. Onlookers can be heard shouting, "He's an elderly man, take it easy with him." Eventually, police took the man’s hands and guided him down, after which he tried to break free, before finally being put in handcuffs and taken to a police car. 
Mr Sherwood, a pastor for 35 years, said: "I wasn't making any homophobic comments, I was just defining marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman. I was only saying what the Bible says – I wasn't wanting to hurt anyone or cause offence. "I was doing what my job description says, which is to preach the gospel in open air as well as in a church building. "When the police approached me, I explained that I was exercising my religious liberty and my conscience. I was forcibly pulled down from the steps and suffered some injury to my wrist and to my elbow. I do believe I was treated shamefully. It should never have happened." Mr Sherwood, who preaches at an independent evangelical church in north London, was arrested under the Public Order Act for allegedly causing alarm or distress. He was released without charge but a file has now been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service for review. The Metropolitan Police said a member of the public flagged down patrol officers and alleged Mr Sherwood had made homophobic comments. Mr Sherwood said officers grilled him over his attitude to gay people. He was even asked what he would do if his children were gay. The married father-of-two said: "The question was irrelevant to the allegation against me. Baba Ijesha was recently arrested by the Lagos state police command to allegedly molesting a minor. In a tweet posted on Thursday, April 29, Dabiri-Erewa attacked the accused actor, dismissing his plea for mercy in a now-viral video where he confessed to the crime. “So despicable! A West Virginia man accused of sexually assaulting a juvenile relative for six years is now facing over 300 counts of incest.The accused, Billie Gene Seabolt, 65, of Clendenin was arrested on Wednesday, April 28, according to a criminal complaint. A trooper responded to a call from Seabolt’s home saying another man had allegedly “made” the juvenile relative leave the home with him. The caller said they believed they had gone to a home in Kanawha County.The trooper then went to the other man’s home and spoke with him, his wife, and the juvenile, the complaint stated.The criminal complaint also states that the juvenile then allegedly told the trooper she had wanted to leave Seabolt’s home. The trooper said she briefly explained “things of sexual nature were taking place” at the home.The trooper then contacted the Woman’s and Children’s Advocacy Center for a forensic interview. During the interview, the juvenile reportedly claimed Seabolt had sexually assaulted her at least once a week from 2014 to 2017 and then again after 2018.According to the criminal complaint, the trooper went back to Seabolt’s home and arrested him. He is charged with one count of sexual abuse by a custodian or guardian, first-degree sexual assault, and 312 counts of incest — one count for each week during that time period.Seabolt is reportedly being held in the Central Regional Jail on a $1 million bond. So, I will renew my commitment in Man O’ War.“Yes, the nation is faced with insecurity challenges right now all over the place. We have insurgency in the north-east, banditry in the north-west. We have herders/farmers clash in the north-central zone of the country. And we thought those were far, remote, but now, they are at our doorstep. Here also in Oyo state, we have been dealing with kidnapping, farmer/herder clashes and people have suddenly become temperamental.“Before now, if you were walking on the street, you would see some issues arise and people would settle them amicably. But now, they will almost kill one another. So, this is a period that Man O’ War will need to double its efforts and look at programmes at the grassroots level where we can project more on the issue of citizenship and leadership for our country.“In schools, we have discussed with the honourable commissioner for education before now on the issue of security. Governor Ortom who angrily reacted to the killing, accused President Buhari of "just working for Fulanis to take over the whole country." The Governor also lamented that no fewer than 70 people have been killed in the last two weeks in three local governments in the Benue State. At least 44 people were crushed to death and more than 150 people injured in a stampede after midnight Thursday, April 29, at a religious bonfire festival in Israel. The incident happened at a mass gathering to celebrate the Lag B’Omer holiday at Mount Meron, Israel, medics said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incident "a terrible disaster." 
The Magen David Adom rescue service said 38 people had been killed at the scene. It said its paramedics treated dozens of people, including 18 in a serious condition, 2 who were moderately hurt, and 80 lightly injured. All the wounded were evacuated to hospitals. The wounded were taken to the Ziv hospital in Safed, the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, Rambam hospital in Haifa, Poriya hospital in Tiberias, and Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem. The Ziv hospital said six of the wounded had died and the Health Ministry confirmed that the total death toll was 44. Army Radio reported that children were among the dead and injured. 
Several hospitals opened hotlines for people to search for family and friends who may have been injured. The Magen David Adom rescue service said the tragedy was caused by a crush and overcrowding. A police official said dozens of participants in a concert had "slipped," falling on those below them while walking along a slippery walkway and causing a crushing domino effect. MDA spokesman Zaki Heller told the Ynet news site that the deaths were caused by severe overcrowding. Huge crowds were attending the annual gathering in the northern Galilee, which include visits to the gravesite of the second-century sage Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai and massive bonfires on the mountainside. "The rescue teams were called to one of the concerts near Bar Yochai’s tomb, where there was a terrible crush near a building. There were dozens trapped on a nearby stand and it took time to evacuate them," Heller said. "There are fatalities, it is a very terrible tragedy," he said, adding that it was a very complicated rescue effort that was still ongoing throughout the night. Pictures from the scene showed bodies covered in blankets and bags.

Manchester United came back from a first half capitulation against Roma to record a massive 6-2 win in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final on Thursday night, April 29. Edinson Cavani was simply superb during the game as he contributed two goals, two assists and won a penalty for the club which came back from 2-1 down in the first half to win this semi-final first leg tie 6-2. 
United were in control of the match from the start, with United starting Pogba Cavani and Rashford as a front three in front of Fernandes, Fred and McTominay.While Roma paraded Edin Dzeko and Manchester United's former players Henrikh Mhikytaryan and Chris Smalling In the first half AS Roma made three substitutions including their goalkeeper due to injury.Pogba executed a superb turn that left three Roma players in his wake and found Cavani whose touch just inside the area was perfect for Fernandes to lift over the advancing goalkeeper. 
Just only four minutes later Pogba undid his good work by handing Roma a penalty after handling the ball while trying to block a cross from Rick Karsdorp.David De Gea , not too good with penalties, missed Lorenzo Pellegrini’s spot-kick, despite diving the right way. 
Pogba then tried to retaliate with a long range shot that Pau Lopez saved, however the Roma goalkeeper dislocated his shoulder so had to be substituted. Roma then pounced again. 
The team took the lead through Edin Dzeko after hitting the ball home from close range after a slick move from the visitors. The first half ended 2-1.Then just three minutes after the break, Pogba found Cavani who exchanged passes with Fernandes before finishing superbly with a first time side-footed effort into the top right-hand corner. 
Aaron Wan Bissaka’s 64th minute cross shot was spilled by the goalkeeper and Cavani was at the right place to poach it home.Cavani then caused a penalty after Smalling fouled him near the byline. 
Fernandes calmly placed the spot kick away and then on 75 minutes he provided the cross from Luke Shaw’s short corner for Pogba to head home and make it five goals for Manchester United. 
United were not done yet. 
Mason Greenwood came on to add number six after getting a great ball from Cavani with the outside of his boot to fire home.United will now travel to Roma next week for the second leg.The post
